You will find me if you want me in the garden Unless it's pouring down with rain
The March 23 Massimo De Carlo opened the staff of Christian Holstad You will find me if you want me in the garden Unless it's pouring down with rain. After the success of the show I Confess at the Galleria Civica of Modena in 2010, the artist exposes new collages, sculptures and video suspended in dialogue with each other in the space in Via Ventura 5 in Milan.
The show's title to resume the song of the 1996 "The Garden" of the German group Einstürzende Neubauten, one of the band and most significant for the spread of industrial rock in the early '80s. Elements drawn from music, fashion, publishing and the world of everyday reality merge in the sculptures, drawings, collages and videos of Christian Holstad, through a process of review and manipulation that sees the artist personally committed assembling, crop and even sewing. Garments, textiles, objects, until you get to photographs and images taken from newspapers and magazines, are reprocessed to create new worlds visionary, aesthetically grotesque and fascinating at the same time.
Christian Holstad was born in Anaheim, California, in 1972. Lives and works in New York. Among his most recent solo shows I Confess at the Galleria Civica di Modena (2009), Christian Holstad: The Terms of Endearment at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Miami (2006), Gaity: Discovering the Lost Art (in Absentia) at the Kunsthalle Zurich (2004). He has exhibited in major international exhibitions such as the Yokohama Triennial (2008), the Lyon Biennial (2007), Moscow (2007) and the Whitney Biennial (2004). His works are in public collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, Miami and Chicago, the Astrup Fearnley Museet for Modern Kunst, Oslo, and the Armand Hammer Museum of Art in Los Angeles.
